Explaining Photocopier Specifications and Terminology

A photocopier is a machine for copying documents or pictures. There is also a multifunction copier that functions not just for copying. The word multifunction, it means it has more than one function. You can print, scan or even fax with this multi-function copier.

What are some important specifications you need to know about the photocopier?

PPM. A ppm stands for pages per minute. It is the standard speed at which a copier can print a page for a minute. Some copiers can copy at least 20 ppm, while others can copy up to 85 ppm. Look for a copier that can copy more.

Paper Tray Size. If you see 4R, 5R, A4, A3, and A5, the size of a paper copier tray can fit. Always look for a copier that is compatible with a wide range of paper sizes.

Paper Weight. Sometimes, when you print, you notice that the paper won’t feed on the tray. Check the paper’s weight or the gsm of the paper. The gsm stands for gram per square meter. The usual gsm of ordinary bond paper is 60 to 80 gsm. The photo paper or specialty paper ranges from 110 to 210 gsm.

Look for a photocopier that is suitable for a variety of gsm to avoid problems in the future. Always check the gsm of the paper if it is compatible with your copier. The usual crumpling of paper in the feeder may cause damage to your copier.

Paper Capacity. There are two types of paper sources in a copier. One is the paper tray, and the other is the paper feeder. The tray can usually hold 500 sheets of paper, while the feeder can only hold up to 100 sheets.

Some copiers have two trays and a feeder, while some have only one tray and one feeder. Another copier can only have a tray or a feeder. Look for a copier that has more paper sources and can hold more paper sheets. This will limit your time from filling up paper when copying an enormous number of documents.

Interface or Connectivity. It is the mode of connection between your copier and the host (PC, notebook, or android phone). The common connectivity of the copier is a direct connection through a USB port. You can also print via the network if your printer has a Network Interface Card (NIC), WLAN, and ethernet.

Memory and Hard Drive Capacity. Look for a copier with high memory and a large HDD size. The memory is for the copier to store jobs in line for copying once the feeder is out of paper.

Explaining Photocopier Specifications and Terminology

What are the terms you need to know when it comes to photocopiers?

Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). This allows you to have many copies without having to copy one at a time. When you set the number of copies you want, the copier automatically does the copying. All you have to do is wait until it finishes the job.

Duplex. This special feature of a photocopier enables you to copy on both sides of the paper.

Resolution. It is the quality of the output. You need a higher resolution for a high-quality output or printout.

Reduce and Enlarge. Another feature of a photocopier is that it enables you to make the print larger or make it smaller. If you want a larger output for a wallet-size picture, you have to enlarge the size.
